PORTLAND, Ore. – The Northwest Christian University softball team dropped two more games on Sunday, closing out the Northwest Cup with an 0-4 tournament record.
Â
NCU dropped their opener on Sunday to British Columbia, 7-1. After losing to the Thunderbirds by just one run in a tournament the week before, the Beacons were optimistic going in, but a six-run first inning spelled doom for the ladies.
Â
In the bottom of the first, UBC posted six runs despite collecting just four hits as NCU committed three errors. The T-birds posted five runs before a single out was recorded, but
Janieve Boyles (0-2) was able to get herself out of it with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.
Â
NCU posted their run in the third when
Anita Singh scored off a single from
Addy Hoskins (pictured).
Â
Jill Suratt threw the final five innings in relief for the Beacons giving up five hits. Her lone blemish came on a solo home run in the fourth inning. Hoskins ended the game batting 3-for-3 and Singh was 2-for-3 including her collegiate extra-base hit, a double in the fifth inning.
Â
A lot of crooked numbers were also put up in the second game as the Beacons lost to St. Martin's 10-3. The Saints scored four in the top of the first inning on Beacon starter
Katie Walker but NCU answered with all three of their runs in the bottom frame.
Randi Kostner opened the inning with a single and after getting sacrificed to second, scored on a
Parker Bonife hit. The SMU starter then surrendered four straight walks which brought in two additional runs as Bonife and
Taylor Medley scored.
Â
St. Martin's added a run in the fourth and then put the game away with a five-run sixth inning which also included a bases-loaded walk and bags-full hit-by-pitch. Walker was charged with all five runs.
Â
Bonife finished the game going 2-for-3 and Suratt threw the final 1.2 innings without allowing a hit.
Â
The Beacons (1-11) will now have the opportunity to regroup with 17 days before their next counting game, a road trip to Western Oregon on March 11. This weekend the team will be in Clackamas to play four scrimmages, two apiece against Clackamas CC and Bellevue CC.Â
