Steve Masten's first victory over his son-in-law couldn't have come at a worse time for NCU. On the heels of two Southern Oregon losses over the weekend, the Beacons were just one victory away from the No. 4 seed in the CCC playoffs and their first ever home playoff game. Instead, Corban knocked off the Beacons 67-56 and NCU claimed fifth place in the CCC and a trip to face SOU in Ashland on Wednesday in the first round of the conference tournament.
Â
Jordan Carter provided the senior-night fireworks for Corban (15-12, 8-10 CCC) scoring 17 points and nine rebounds in his final home game. Carter's three-pointer as the shot clock expired with 1:45 remaining proved to be the final dagger in a game-closing 12-2 run that provided the Warriors with their first win over the Beacons in over two seasons.
Â
The Beacons (17-10, 10-8) failed to place a player in double-figures as they shot just 37.5% from the field and were 4-for-18 from three-point range. It was the second lowest point total of the season for NCU and just the fourth time this season that the team was held under 60 points.
Â
NCU scored the first bucket of the game on a
Devyn Iglehart jumper, but the visitors would end up holding a lead for less than four total minutes in the contest. The last NCU lead, 32-29 late in the first half, disappeared with a 7-2 Warrior run to close the half and give Corban a 37-34 advantage at halftime.
Â
Corban came out at a blistering pace in the second half, quickly building a 46-35 lead fueled by back-to-back Caleb Herzberg triples. A Carter three-pointer with 11:39 to play gave the Warriors a 55-44 lead.
Â
It was then that the Beacons finally put together a string of successful possessions scoring ten straight points to pull within one point on a
Travis Pacos floater with 8:31 to play. Unfortunately for NCU, Toby Roth put an end to the rally with a three-pointer.
Â
With 7:25 to play
Javonte Byrd gave the Beacons a pair of free-throws for what would be the final NCU points of the night. Northwest Christian missed no less than five three-point attempts over the final stretch, turned the ball over twice, and was unable to capitalize on five missed free-throws by Corban over the final three minutes.
Â
NCU was led in the loss by
Omar Richards (pictured), scoring nine points including a 7-for-8 performance at the charity stripe. Byrd,
Jay Mayernik and
Austin Kuemper added eight points apiece with Mayernik adding a team-best six rebounds.
Â
Corban was led by Carter's 17 and had three other players in double-figures as they shot 55.6% in the game. Herzberg added 14, hitting four-of-seven attempts from beyond the arc as the Warriors shot 52% from the three-point line as a team. Roth came off the bench to score 12 and Cyrus Ward added ten points.
Â
NCU finished with ten CCC wins for the second straight year and match their best ever seed for the conference tournament at No. 5. Tip-off for Wednesday's quarterfinal clash at Southern Oregon is set for 7:00 pm.
Â
Corban earned the No. 6 seed for the tournament and travels to face No. 3 Warner Pacific, who tied with both College of Idaho and Concordia for the CCC regular-season championship.Â
