Beacons Swept by No. 11 Mounties

LA GRANDE, Ore. – No. 11 Eastern Oregon University Volleyball swept Northwest Christian, 25-11, 25-20 25-19, improving to 5-0 in conference play. Kayla Ping led the Beacons with eight kills.
 
In the first set Eastern Oregon kept the lead the entire game and went on a four point run before Northwest Christian could even score. EOU stayed strong throughout the set and kept extending their lead over the Beacons before eventually taking set one after a kill by Casey Loper. 
 
In the second set Northwest Christian picked up their game and kept the score close, but EOU held the lead the entire set. Half way through the set, EOU had the lead 19-11 when the Beacons stole some momentum, going on a four point run bringing the score to 19-15. The Mountaineers continued to hold strong and after two attack errors by the Beacons EOU took set two, 25-20. 
 
Eastern Oregon had a lot of momentum going into the third set. The Beacons came out fighting and held the score close throughout. There were five ties during the set but Northwest Christian could never pull ahead. With the score, 17-16 in Eastern Oregon's advantage, EOU took control. Tuma recorded the last two kills of the set to give EOU set three, 25-19. 
 
The Beacons (3-5, 1-4 CCC) were led by Chelsea McGowan (pictured), securing seven kills and a team-leading four blocks. Ping had the eight kills, along with eight digs and three blocks. Haley Damian once again led NCU defensively, collecting a team-high ten digs.
 
Eastern Oregon (15-1, 5-0), was led by Loper, finishing with 14 kills and no errors for a .452 hitting percentage. Kasaundra Tuma added 11 kills and four blocks. Rachelle Chamberlain led all players with 35 assists while Jessalyn Smith posted a match-high 17 digs.
 
Eastern Oregon is now 5-0 in conference play and 15-1 overall. Their next game will be Friday Sept. 26 when they travel to Ashland, Ore. to face Southern Oregon at 7 p.m.
