Bruins Sneak Out OT Win

NEWBERG, Ore. - In a battle of two exceptionally even teams, George Fox squeezed out a 2-1 victory over Northwest Christian on Tuesday in men's soccer action. 90 minutes wasn't enough as the Bruins scored the game winner in the second overtime period.

George Fox caught NCU napping early, scoring in the second minute of the contest as Luke Hammer punched in an unassisted header in front of the net.

NCU countered with the equalizer in the 11th minute as Angel Sandoval (pictured) took a cross from Chris Hendler and fired home the point-blank goal.

For the next 92 minutes the combatants engaged in an epic battle. The Beacons came close to pulling it out over the final ten minutes of regulation when both Adrian Palacios and Chase Pearson managed to punch shots off of the goalposts. The end of regulation came, as did the first ten minutes of overtime and after 100 minutes of play, both teams had taken 18 shots, 7 shots-on-goal, and had six keeper saves. The foul count was close (19-18) and the foes combined for 6 corner kicks.

Unfortunately for the visitors, The Bruins managed to find the victory strike in the third minute of overtime number two when Daniel Alonzo connected off a cross from Luke Dickens.

Head Coach Brett Bentley said, "We came out a little over confident after the win against Multnomah, but we eventually started to play the quality NCU soccer that we've been working on. At the end of the day, when the situation was there we needed to be sharper. One thing we'll walk away with is that we need to be a little better in the attacking third so this will be a good lesson for the guys."

Northwest Christian (1-1) is off for one week, returning to the road next Tuesday night when they travel to Washington to take on Trinity Lutheran College at 8:00 pm.
