Beacons Open With Shutout Win

Box Score EUGENE, Ore.  – Sophomore Adrian Palacios (pictured) scored two goals and junior Aaron Chesnut added three assists as the Beacons opened the 2014 season on Thursday with a 6-0 win over Multnomah University. It was the first game for the newly launched men's soccer program at Multnomah.

It was a Chesnut-to-Palacios combo that opened up the scoring for NCU in the 14th minute. A cross found Palacios open at the goal line for an easy tap-in.

After missing nearly the entire 2013 season due to injury, junior Chris Hendler wasted little time making an impact as he found the back of the net from five-yards out in the 20th minute. His goal launched the Beacons into an aggressive offensive tirade as they added three more goals within four minutes to move ahead, 5-0.

First Chesnut found junior transfer Angel Sandoval with a short pass setting up a long ten-yard strike into the middle of the net for Sandoval's first goal as a Beacon. Then in the 23rd minute a combination pass from Chesnut and Chase Pearson left Palacios open for his second successful strike of the afternoon.

Freshman Zeph Hollins closed out the flurry in the 24th minute. Coming into the game off the bench, Hollins was just 33 second into his collegiate career when he collected a loose ball at the top of the box and slammed home his first collegiate goal.

The Beacons weren't done, adding one more goal in the 39th minute. NCU was rewarded with 11 corner kicks in the game and broke through as Vladyslav Boloban lifted a ball to the backside of the net where a waiting TJ Burton put in the goal off of his shoulder.

Coming into the game with just eleven players, Multnomah was down to ten after a game-ending injury to one of their players, leading head coach Brett Bentley to call off the dogs in the second half. The Beacons played strong possession soccer for the duration, taking just two shots on goal over the final 45 minutes to cruise to the shutout victory.

The Beacon backline played a flawless game, keeping Multnomah from ever taking a shot. NCU had 32 shots of their own including 16 shots-on-goal, but 26 of those efforts came in the first half.

After the match Bentley said, "The guys played very well today and took advantage of the opportunities that they created. It showed a lot of improvement offensively and I am pleased with the energy and commitment to play as a group. Moving forward we'll be looking to solidify a starting eleven so this gave a lot of guys a chance to run out and show us what they could do."

NCU will be back in action on September 2 when they travel to Newberg to take on George Fox University at 6:00 pm.
