Hannon Homer Lifts Beacons to Sweep

Game One Box Score | Game Two Box Score

KIRKLAND, Wash. - The Northwest Christian University softball team swept a double-header from Northwest University on Friday on the back of lights-out pitching and timely hitting winning 2-1 and 2-0.

GAME ONE

All the scoring took place in the seventh inning as the Beacons edged the Eagles 2-1 in the first game of the doubleheader. Senior Chelsea Hannon came up with a clutch, two-run home run in the top of the frame, driving in Ally Mittleider who had singled to right to get on base. Northwest attempted a rally in the bottom of the seventh as Janey Ganta hit a solo home run over the center field fence to make it a 2-1 ball game. Lizzy Reimer then doubled to left, but two Eagles would fly out to end the rally and the game.

Both teams had scoring opportunities with the bases loaded, but neither team would score. NCU loaded them up in the top of the 3rd on three hits, but failed to bring a runner home and Northwest U had the bases packed in the bottom of the 6th with no outs and came up scoreless.

Freshman Bre Johnson picked up the win for NCU going the distance and allowing only 4 NU hits and issuing only one walk. The Eagles' Kelli Peckham suffered the complete-game loss, scattering nine hits. NCU was led by senior Gabby Stover who went 3-for-3 on the day. Laynee Bevans was 2-for-4 in the leadoff spot. Lizzy Reimer went 2 for 3 for Northwest U and Ganta was 1 for 2 with the HR.

GAME TWO

NCU took the next game, 2-0 and the second game proved to be equally as close as neither team could put a run across home plate in the first four innings. Freshman Janieve Boyles went two solid innings yielding no hits through the first eight batters. She was forced to leave in the top of the third when she was injured sliding back into first base after Chelsea Hannon lined into a double play. Katie Walker came in to relieve Boyles and pitched five scoreless innings, holding Northwest U to three hits and without a score while facing 18 Eagles batters.

Northwest Christian (7-20, 6-10 CCC) scored their two runs in the top of the fifth on a base hit and two NU errors. Ally Mittleider scored on an NU miscue and Chelsea Hannon scored on Laynee Bevans' single to right. Mittleider had advanced to third base on an NU error.

Northwest U's (1-21, 1-14 CCC) Kierston Perry went all seven innings and pitched a 4-hitter with no walks. Sarah Payne, Ganta and Perry had the base hits for the Eagles.

Stover went 2 for 3 for NCU to cap off a strong 5-for-6 day at the dish.

The Beacons continued their mastery over the second-year program, improving their record over the Eagles to 8-0, sweeping all double-headers in both 2013 and 2014. The pair of wins also help NCU match their conference win total from last season with 12 games left to play.

NCU returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Portland to take on Concordia University beginning at 11:00 am. The Cavaliers swept NCU in Eugene earlier this season.
