EUGENE, Ore. –The Northwest Christian University softball team got back on track Saturday, sweeping a double-header from Northwest University in Cascade Collegiate Conference action at James Park. The Beacons claimed the opener 8-0 in five innings and won the second game, 4-2.
NCU is now 6-0 all-time against the Eagles, who launched their softball program in 2013.
Jill Suratt (pictured) pitched a complete-game gem for the Beacons in the morning contest, allowing just two hits over five innings while striking out three batters. She improves her record to 2-2 on the season with the victory. Offensively, NCU had seven hits and did all of their scoring in the third inning.
Jordan Bennett led off the inning with a single and NCU was off to the races. With two on,
Addy Hoskins hit an RBI single.
Randi Kostner followed with an RBI groundout to make it 2-0.
Gabby Stover then had an RBI single, scoring Hoskins. After
Parker Bonife was hit by a pitch it was Suratt's turn to do damage at the plate. Her two-run single up the middle drove home both Bonife and Stover and NCU was up 5-0.
A walk to
Bre Johnson put two runners on once again, leading up to a three-run bomb from
Jordan Bennett, her first of the season. With two hits in the third, Bennett was the only Beacon to grab multiple hits in the contest.
The offensive first game made way for a defensive second game. Each team scored single runs in the first inning and NCU took their first lead in the bottom of the second when an RBI double by
Chelsea Hannon brought home Suratt.
The Beacons added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. With runners at first-and-third, NCU pulled off a double-steal as
Randi Kostner came home. Bonife later scored on a single by Suratt.
Janieve Boyles (1-1) got the win for NCU, pitching four innings. The freshman scattered six hits and allowed one earned run while striking out two. Johnson came in for the final three innings of relief work to garner the save. She allowed just one hit, a solo homer to Bethany Bacon in the top of the seventh.
NCU will return to action on Tuesday, traveling to Salem to take on Corban University in another non-conference double-header. Corban is 3-0 against the Beacons so far this season.
