Cavaliers Sweep Double-Header

EUGENE, Ore. –The Northwest Christian University softball team dropped a pair of Cascade Collegiate Conference games on Friday afternoon, swept by Concordia 8-2 and 12-0.

The Beacons collected eight hits in the first game of the day, but were only able to muster a pair of runs, not enough to counter the 11-hit output from the Cavaliers.

With CU ahead 3-0, the Beacons pushed their first run across in the bottom of the third inning. Chelsea Hannon (pictured) singled and later scored on a double down the left field line by Addy Hoskins. The final run came in the seventh inning when pinch-runner Kaeli Massetto scored on an RBI double from Laynee Bevans.

Bevans, Hannon, and Bre Johnson each collected two hits for NCU in the loss. Jill Suratt (1-2) took the loss in the pitching circle, allowing seven earned runs in six innings. The junior did post a team season-best seven strikeouts in the contest.

McKenzie Marshall (6-3) threw a complete game for Concordia, striking out three batters.

Game two proved to be all Concordia, using an eight-run fourth inning to claim the five-inning run-rule victory. Taylor Bussey hit a pair of solo home runs in the inning two of CU's four bombs on the day.

NCU was limited to just one hit in the game on starter Lucy Baldovino (3-1), who faced the minimum number of batters in the game. Chelsea Hannon had the lone hit for the Beacons but was then caught stealing second base for the third out of the third inning.

Katie Walker (1-5) took the loss for the Beacons, allowing three earned runs over three innings.

Northwest Christian University will return to action on Saturday, playing host to Northwest University in another CCC double-header, beginning at 11:00 am.
