HAPPY VALLEY, Ore. –
Parker Bonife cracked her third home run of the season, and
Laynee Bevans (pictured) showed off her speed, but Corban University walked away with a 10-2 victory on Wednesday afternoon in the first game of a scheduled non-conference neutral site double-header at Hood View Park.
The second game of was suspended by heavy rain after five innings with the Warriors holding a 7-1 lead. That contest will be completed before the scheduled double-header between the teams in Eugene on Monday.
After the graduation of the NAIA all-time home run champ, Stephanie Nippert, nobody would have been surprised to see the Corban offense take a dip this season. Newcomer Breonna Bejaran, however, is trying to fill in some of that gap. She pelted two home runs and drove in five as she led Corban to the six-inning victory on Wednesday.
The Beacons scored their first run in the fifth inning when Bevans reached on a walk, stole second base and scored from second on the ensuing single by
Addy Hoskins. Bonife led off the sixth with a solo blast for NCU's other run. Jazzy Villaruel and
Jill Suratt also had singles for the Beacons in the contest.
Jessica Holsinger (1-0) earned the victory in the circle for Corban.
Katie Walker took the loss for the Beacons despite striking out six batters in 5.1 innings of work.
NCU is scheduled to be back in action on Saturday hosting Chemeketa Community College for a double-header scrimmage. Any potential schedule change will be released on GoBEACONS.com by the end of the day Friday. Then on Monday, the Beacons will host Corban for the conclusion of Wednesday's second game, followed by another non-conference double-header. Action will begin at 1:00 pm.
