Beacons Hit 16 Threes in Victory Over Eagles

EUGENE, Ore. – The Northwest Christian men's basketball team posted their highest point total in 24 years on Tuesday night, crushing Northwest Indian College, 121-76. Nine players scored at least nine points and multiple records fell on a historic night for NCU.

In the first half the Beacons set a new single-half scoring record with 60 points only to break that mark in the second-half with 61. NCU also broke a record with 16 three-pointers, hitting one more than they had against Multnomah in 2013. Five of those treys came from true freshman Kyle Ferreira (pictured) who led NCU off the bench with 16 points.

NCU's single-game scoring record is 134, set in an overtime game against Warner Pacific in 1991. The record for a game in regulation is 123, dating back exactly 28 years to December 16, 1986 against Puget Sound Bible.

The teams traded baskets to open the game and the Eagles held a 5-4 lead with 17:38 remaining for their only lead of the game. A Travis Pacos jumper and Austin Kuemper three pointer put the Beacons ahead for good and NCU led by as many as 24 in the first half before taking a 60-38 lead into halftime.

The final 45-point margin of victory was NCU's highest since joining the NAIA in 2007. NCU shot over 60% for the second straight game, finishing at a .613 clip as they hit 46-of-75 attempts. The team was a scorching 57% from three-point range. NCU also out-rebounded Northwest Indian College, 44-23 including 17 offensive boards. The Beacons forced 22 turnovers and had 14 steals including another three for Pacos.

Ferreira finished his night shooting 5-for-7 from three-point range adding two blocks and two steals to his 16-point effort off the bench. In fact, all four top scorers came from the Beacon reserves, including Javonte Byrd with 14 points and Harley Turner with 11 as each player posted a pair of buckets from downtown. Redshirt freshman Calvin Anderson had his best game of the season with nine points.

Sophomore Jay Mayernik, a former player at Southern Oregon University, played in his first collegiate basketball game in over ten years and made his return to the court a good one, just missing a double-double as he scored 12 points and nine rebounds. He was 6-for-7 from the field. In all, the NCU bench outscored the Eagle pine-riders 77-24.

Among the Beacon starters, Kuemper and Michael Loomis scored ten points apiece with Loomis also chipping in seven rebounds. Jack Hackman and Devyn Iglehart added nine points each with Iglehart adding a team-high six assists.

Northwest Indian (1-18) was led by Mike Schjang, posting a game-high 19 points with six assists and three steals. Sheridan Nodestine added 16 points shooting 4-for-8 from three-point range.

The Beacons (8-2) will ride a six-game winning streak into this weekend's Cascade Collegiate Conference action. NCU travels to Kirkland on Friday night to take on Northwest University (9-4) at 7:30 p.m. They will wrap the weekend in Olympia on Saturday afternoon, taking on Evergreen (3-6) at 5:00 p.m.
