ROCKLIN, Calif. – The Northwest Christian University men's basketball team came away from the Bill Holtz Warrior Classic with a split after knocking off Cal Maritime Academy on Friday afternoon, 73-54. The Keelhaulers, ranked No. 22 in the NAIA coaches poll, were held to 37% shooting by a stingy Beacon defense.
Â
NCU was productive on offense as well, shooting 52% with just eight turnovers in the game. After leading by just two points, 28-26 at the intermission, the Beacons poured in 45 after the break and pulled away behind 14 second-half points from
Devyn Iglehart (pictured).
Â
The Beacons (2-1) had four players in double-figures, led by Iglehart with 17 and eight assists. Through three games, the senior point guard is averaging 6.3 assists per game. Also scoring 17 was sophomore
Jack Hackman. Senior
Travis Pacos and junior
Austin Kuemper each scored 16 points with Kuemper also contributing six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Â
Head Coach
Luke Jackson said, "Devyn played extremely well tonight. He led the team and controlled the tempo.
Michael Loomis didn't shoot the ball extremely well but both him and Travis defended the ball with great intensity. The game was won on the defensive end with stops and great box-outs."
Â
Cal Maritime was led in defeat by Kameron Hoyt, scoring 13 points. He shot 3-for-5 from three-point range and was the only Keelhauler in double figures. Dominique Barnes scored nine points while Roman Delgado added six points and six rebounds.
Â
Northwest Christian will now have a week to prepare for their next game. The Beacons travel to Alamosa, Colorado next Saturday night, taking on NCAA Division II Adams State College at 7 p.m. MST. It will be the first game of the season for the Grizzlies.Â
