Beacons Go Deep for Defensive Victory

EUGENE, Ore.  – Every athlete on the roster played at least 11 minutes and 12 different players found the bottom of the net on Wednesday as the Beacons posted an 83-31 victory over Multnomah University.

The 52-point margin of victory fell short of the NCU record but the Beacons did establish a new all-time best as they held the Lions to just 16.1% shooting in the game. Northwest Christian also allowed just 13 points in the first half, tying the program record.

The Beacons wasted no time in establishing their defensive dominance, shooting out to a 13-0 lead. Multnomah, in their first season as an intercollegiate program, didn't score a field goal over the first 8:17 and the Beacons held a 21-2 lead with just over nine minutes remaining. The halftime margin had increased to 25 with the Beacons holding a 38-13 advantage as they headed for the locker room.

NCU would quickly go ahead by 30 as a Sami Pitts three-pointer with 17:13 to play gave the Beacons a 45-15 lead. The teams began trading buckets and with 10:13 to play, Abby Lewellen hit a three-pointer to bring the Lions to within 28 points, 56-28. Little did they know at the time but that would be the final field goal for Multnomah as they went ice cold to end the game, shooting 0-for-21 from the field over the final nine minutes.

Northwest Christian (3-1) had four players score in double-figures in the game, including just one starter. Pitts scored 13 points in 17 minutes of work. Breanna Schmidt and Melyssa Weber (pictured) also scored 13 points each off the bench while Carly Bigby found double-figures with ten points. NCU out-rebounded the Lions 57-42, led by a career-high 16-rebound haul for MeShel Rad. The junior added five points, four assists and three blocks on the night.

Multnomah (0-3) was led by Lewellen, scoring nine points. Michaela Weller added eight points and a team-high ten rebounds while Olivia Botsford scored six points and two assists.

The Beacons will return to action next Tuesday, continuing a three-game homestand as they play host to Willamette University (1-1) at 7 p.m.
