Beacons Split With No. 19 Concordia

EUGENE, Ore. – Freshman Sarah Lawhorn (pictured) ended her first collegiate season on a high note on Saturday, getting a complete-game victory in game one as the Northwest Christian University softball team split a double-header with Concordia University. The Beacons took game one, 2-1 and the Cavaliers won the closer, 7-4.

Lawhorn (6-11) scattered nine hits and struck out one batter over seven innings. The only CU damage came via a solo home run from Laura Luther in the second inning.

Trailing 1-0, the Beacon quickly evened things up in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Melissa Webster. The winning run came across in the bottom of the sixth inning. Laynee Bevans singled to open the inning. She then stole second and the throw from home to try and get her out ended up in centerfield with Bevans coming all the way around for the score.

Lawhorn worked herself out of trouble numerous times as the Cavaliers stranded seven runners on base, including a pair in scoring position. In the bottom of the seventh inning Concordia had an opportunity to change the outcome of the game. Tobey Varney hit a two-out single through the right side to get on base with the potential tying run. The next batter, Katie Aden, crushed a pitch to deep centerfield. NCU centerfielder Chelsea Hannon, as she has done on countless occasions throughout the season, made a highlight-reel catch, diving back onto the warning track for the final out of the game.

The Beacons collected three stolen bases in the game, including one for Gabby Stover as the junior laid claim to NCU's career record for steals. She how has 30 stolen bases in her career with one season remaining.

It was the Beacons who would strike first in game two, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Bevans opened up the game with a single and Randi Kostner followed with a single to shallow centerfield. The Cavalier fielder misplayed the ball as it shot under her glove and all the way to the wall, allowing Bevans to score from first as Kostner went all the way to third base. Parker Bonife then gave NCU the 2-0 lead with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, bringing home Kostner.

Concordia's offense began to find a rhythm in game two, scoring a run in the second and then taking a 5-2 lead with four runs in the fourth inning. CU added two more in the top of the fifth to make it 7-2.

The Beacons wouldn't go down without a fight, scoring their final two runs of the season in the bottom of the fifth. Bevans hit a two-out single and then Kostner busted a triple to right field, scoring both Bevans and herself as she came home on a bobbled throw to third base.

Bevans and Kostner each finished the game with two hits, as did Addy Hoskins, going 2-for-3. Jordan Bennett (1-16) took the loss in the circle, allowing five earned runs in 3.2 innings. Lawhorn finished out the game pitching the final 3.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits.

Concordia (34-19, 19-9 CCC), who heads into the Cascade Collegiate Conference as the No. 2 seed, was led in game two by Varney, batting 4-for-5. Aden went 2-for-3 with three RBI and Luther added a pair of runs batted in.

Northwest Christian ends the season in seventh place in the CCC. The Beacons were 8-30 on the year, 6-22 in conference play.
