Bonife Lifts Beacons To Sweep

EUGENE, Ore. – The Northwest Christian University softball team ended a 21-game losing streak on Friday afternoon, sweeping a double-header from Northwest, 4-0 and 3-2. Parker Bonife (pictured, above) helped NCU on both sides of the ball, pitching a complete-game shutout in game one and hitting a three-run homer in game two.

NCU got things off on the right foot, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning in game one. Randi Kostner scored on a two-out RBI double by Gabby Stover and then Stover came home when Dani Gehrke slapped a single up the middle.

The Beacons added two more runs in the fifth inning as Stover once again came through, this time with a single to bring home Kostner and Chelsea Hannon.

Bonife (1-3) stifled the Eagle offense all game, allowing just three hits as she picks up her first career victory. She struck out two batters in the process and added two hits of her own at the plate. Stover ended the game batting 2-for-3 with three RBI.

It was Northwest striking first in the night cap as they tagged starting pitcher Jordan Bennett for two runs in the second inning.

Bonife, however, came to the rescue in the third. Hannon reached base on an error to open the inning and was moved over to second. Another error put Kostner at first before Bonife smashed a fastball to dead centerfield for her seventh home run of the season.

Bennett (1-15) came out of the game after four innings and secured her first win of the season, allowing two runs on just two hits while striking out a pair of batters. Sarah Lawhorn came on in relief and preserved the victory with three scoreless innings, giving up just one hit while striking out two for the first save of her career.

The Beacons only senior, Melissa Webster (pictured below) celebrated NCU's senior day in style, picking up a hit in game two. Stover also registered a stolen base in game two, one of six Beacon steals on the day. It was her seventh stolen base of the season and 29th of her career, tying her for the career record.

NCU (7-29, 5-21 CCC) will finish out the season at home on Saturday, playing host to No. 19 Concordia (33-18, 18-8). Northwest (7-32, 4-22) closes out their season in Salem, taking on CCC Champion Corban (37-11, 22-4).
