Raiders Finish Off Four-Game Sweep

EUGENE, Ore. – For the second time in four days the Southern Oregon University softball team has swept a double-header from the Beacons, this time in 9-6 and 8-2 fashion at James Park. A four-hit, four-run day for junior Gabby Stover (pictured) highlighted the offensive effort from NCU.

In the first game both teams combined for 24 hits as the Raiders survived a late Beacon charge to preserve the victory. The Raiders opened the game scoring the first run in the top of the first, but the Beacons quickly answered in the bottom half when Laynee Bevans tripled to right field and later scored on a double-steal.

SOU added a run in the second and then managed to put the game away with a six-run sixth, taking a 8-1 lead. The Beacons managed a small comeback effort, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth as Addy Hoskins, Jordan Bennett and Ally Mittleider hit back-to-back-to-back RBI singles. Then, after another Southern Oregon run in the top of the seventh, NCU pushed across two more in their final at-bats as Stover hit an RBI triple and then scored on a groundout.

Hoskins finished the game hitting 3-for-4 and Stover was 2-for-4 with two runs. Stover also picked up her sixth stolen base of the season. That gave her 28 in her career, placing her one shy of NCU's all-time record, held by Lisa Martinez (2006-2007). Parker Bonife (0-3) got the start in the circle for the Beacons, allowing four earned runs over five innings of work. She struck out one batter. Bennett came in for the final two innings, allowing just one earned run on three hits.

Southern Oregon pounded out 14 hits including four doubles with Kara Kelsey leading the way. Kelsey went 3-for-5 and was one of five Raiders to have multiple-hit games. Sydney White (14-8) went the distance in the circle, allowing six earned runs while striking out three batters.

Game two had a similar feel as an early pitcher's duel got away from the Beacons with Southern Oregon pulling away. SOU got on the board in the top of the second and NCU answered with a run in the bottom frame, when Stover scored on an RBI single by Dani Gehrke.

The Raiders went on to take an 8-1 lead, scoring one in the fourth, two in the fifth, and four runs in the sixth inning. NCU only managed to get back one of those runs and it was Gehrke doing the damage once again, scoring Stover on a double down the right field line.

Gehrke ended the game hitting 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs while Stover also went 2-for-3 with two runs. Bennett took the loss for the Beacons after allowing two earned runs in five innings. She struck out two and allowed just four hits.

SOU (20-21, 16-12 CCC) finished off their season with an eight-hit game, led by a 2-for-3 afternoon from Irene Barrantes. Karlie Stephens (4-9) threw a complete game for the Raiders, striking out three batters and allowing just one earned run.

Northwest Christian (5-29, 3-21) will be back in action on Friday afternoon when they play host to Northwest University, beginning at 2:00 pm. NCU will honor the lone senior, Melissa Webster during a pre-game ceremony.
