SALEM, Ore. - The Northwest Christian University softball team lost both ends of a double-header on Tuesday against No. 10 Corban University. The Warriors took 10-1 and 4-1 victories, despite a complete-game three-hitter by freshman
Sarah Lawhorn (pictured) in the night cap. Junior
Gabby Stover batted 3-for-5 on the day with a home run.
Corban (32-10, 17-3 CCC) was on the winning end of a 10-1 five-inning run-rule victory in the opener, getting eight hits. Lounette Jackson ended the game with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth.
The Beacons had four hits in the game including singles from
Laynee Bevans,
Randi Kostner, and
Ally Mittleider and a solo home run by
Gabby Stover in the second inning, her second blast of the season.
Jordan Bennett (0-13) took the loss for the Beacons, allowing three earned runs over 3.1 innings.
The Beacons out-hit Corban in the second game, 7-3 but couldn't put together any extended rallies against Chelsea Schriber in a 4-1 loss. Lawhorn (5-9) went all six innings in the circle for NCU giving up four earned runs while striking out one batter.
Kostner and Stover had two hits apiece for the Beacons and
Parker Bonife recorded the teams lone RBI.
The Beacons were able to keep Warrior senior Stephanie Nippert from making history on Tuesday. The slugger currently has 75 career home runs and needs just two dingers to set a new NAIA national record. Nippert went just 0-for-1 in official at-bats, flying out to left field in game two. She was intentionally walked by the NCU pitchers six times on the afternoon, including all four plate appearances in the game one. Earlier this season,
Chelsea Hannon robbed Nippert of another home run, extending over the fence in dead centerfield in a home game.
