EUGENE, Ore. - The Northwest Christian University softball team faced Corban University on Monday in a Cascade Collegiate Conference double-header and lost both games to the first-place Warriors, 8-2 and 7-0.
The Beacons got off to a tough start to the day, allowing five first inning runs and by the fourth inning Corban led 8-0. The Beacons got one run back in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by
Melissa Webster (pictured) and then Webster scored the teams second run in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single by
Devon Murphy.
Both Webster and Murphy had two hits apiece for the Beacons with
Dani Gehrke adding a double.
Jordan Bennett (0-8) pitched 0.2 innings, allowing five earned runs.
Sarah Lawhorn closed out the final 6.1 innings, allowing three runs while striking out two.
Corban was led by Rachel Conard and Courtney Castronovo who each hit home runs while Erica Fitzgerald added a three-RBI day. Amy Greenough got the start and allowed just two hits over the first three innings. Samantha Gutwig (2-0) allowed one earned over the final four innings to snag the victory.
In the second game, three Corban pitchers combined on a one-hitter as the Warriors claimed the 7-0 victory. NCU's lone hit came off the bat of
Parker Bonife.
Lawhorn (5-5) went the distance for NCU, allowing all seven runs while striking out three batters.
Chelsea Schriber (8-3) went the first four innings, allowing one hit with a pair of strikeouts. Jessica Slate and Danielle Horne combined to knock down all nine batters they faced over the final three innings.
Stephanie Nippert, Lounette Jackson, and Conard each hit home runs for the Warriors.
NCU is scheduled to be back in action on Wednesday with a non-conference double-header against Pacific University at James Park. Weather permitting, the first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
