EUGENE, Ore. – After missing the first 17 games of the season, senior
Brooke Davis returned in awe-inspiring fashion this weekend, batting .300 and sending the Beacons to their first win in two years over #22 College of Idaho.
Davis saw her first action of the season on Friday in the series-opening 3-1 win over Eastern Oregon. Two scoreless innings in the circle in game-two of the double-header with the Mounties was then sandwiched on Saturday by a game-winning seventh-inning home run to give NCU the 1-0 upset victory.
Taking place at CI's home field in Caldwell, Idaho due to poor field conditions in Le Grande, the Beacons opened up CCC action with the 3-1 win over Eastern Oregon. It was NCU's first game in 15 days after weather forced a number of cancellations.
The Beacons ended a 12-game losing streak, getting a pair of hits from
Addy Hoskins and
Amanda Reiss in the win.
Gabby Stover went 1-for-2 with an RBI. After a scoreless first two innings, the Beacons got on the scoreboard first in the top of the third.
Megan Mazanec hit a double down the right field line, driving in Stover. NCU added a run an inning later when Stover singled to right to score
Melissa Webster.
Eastern Oregon scored their run in the bottom of the sixth inning but the Beacons answered in the seventh with an RBI double by Reiss, as Davis crossed the plate for the first time this season.
Jenna Royce completed her first save of the season after retiring three straight Mountaineer batters in the bottom of the inning.
Royce threw three innings, allowing three hits and one earned run.
Kalyssa Koontz (1-10) picked up her first win in the circle, allowing four hits without a run while striking out a pair of batters.
In game two, a Mariebeth Watanabe triple in the bottom of the fourth for Eastern drove in the only run of the game, the deep shot to left center brought in Ashli Hughes, who had reached base on an error. Royce took the loss for NCU, despite giving up just one earned run on three hits in the first four innings. Davis came in for the fifth and sixth innings, struck out three batters and allowed just one hit.
Saturday's double-dip with the #22 ranked Coyotes didn't start off on a good note as NCU was held to just two hits in an 8-0 five-inning loss. CI pitcher Nickayla Skinner dominated the Beacons in the game, striking out six batters.
Game two proved to be a pure pitcher's duel with Royce and the Yotes' Kayla Park matching zeroes across the board. NCU had runners in the corners in the first inning but could not score while the Yotes had runners in scoring position in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings but could not get the clutch hit.
Then, Davis came through in the seventh, launching a 3-2 pitch by Skinner, who came in relief in the sixth, deep over the left-centerfield wall. Royce (3-7) was outstanding, allowing just five hits while striking out five batters. No player for either team had more than one hit.
NCU returns to action on Monday, playing host to #5 Oregon Tech at 2:00 pm.
