Beacons Swept by #5 Oregon Tech

EUGENE, Ore. - Fourteen hits over two games weren't enough as the upstart Northwest Christian University softball team was swept in a Cascade Collegiate Conference double-header on Monday, 7-4 and 9-7 by Oregon Tech. The defending NAIA national champions out-slugged the Beacons with 22 hits including four home runs.

The Owls pounded out nine hits in the opener and had a four-run fifth inning to counter a four-run fourth from the Beacons.

Shauna Collins and Taylor Schmidt each had two hits for Oregon Tech while Jess Plummer and Sarah Coates each had home runs in the fifth inning onslaught.

Brooke Davis continued her torrid pace, batting 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Schmidt (10-2) struck out six batters in six innings of work while giving up two earned runs to secure the victory. Morgan Barnes threw a scoreless seventh inning to snag her first save of the season.

Jenna Royce took the loss for NCU allowing five earned runs over four innings. Kalyssa Koontz had three strong innings in relief, allowing two hits while striking out five of the 12 batters she faced.

Game two saw the teams combine for 22 hits and saw the lead change hands three times before Oregon Tech secured the win with two runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Schmidt went 3-for-4 and had two RBI for OIT. Kayde Shaefer was 2-for-4 with three RBI and both Ashleigh Larson and Janelle Cromie also had two hits apiece, one of Cromie's coming by way of the long ball.  Barnes also had a homer for the winners.

Davis was at it again for NCU, going 3-for-4 with three runs, two RBI, a double and her second home run in four days. Amanda Reiss added two hits while Laynee Bevans (pictured) crushed her second homer of the season, a two-run rocket to left-centerfield.

Melissa Logan (3-1) didn't allow a hit over the final three innings to pick up the win for the Owls. Royce (3-9) took the loss for NCU, allowing two runs over the final two innings in relief.

Northwest Christian is scheduled to be back in action at home on Wednesday, playing host to George Fox for a non-conference double-header.
