Beacons Swept on the Road

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CALDWELL, Idaho – The Northwest Christian University women's basketball team remains winless in CCC action after a tough road trip to Eastern Oregon and The College of Idaho. The Beacons put a scare into #9 EOU before falling 71-60 on Friday night. Then on Saturday, the Coyotes grabbed a 58-41 victory at home.

The Mountaineers stayed on top of the CCC standings on Friday as they shot 45% from the field, including a 5-for-19 effort from three-point range. The Beacons opened the game leading for the first seven minutes, taking a 6-2 advantage after back-to-back layups by Jess Anderson and Katie Collins. The Mounties took their first lead with 12:36 to play and stretched the advantage to 36-28 at halftime.

NCU refused to go away, opening the second half on a 13-4 run in just three minutes. After back-to-back three-point plays by Kelsey Atkins, NCU went ahead 41-40 with 16:51 to play. The lead changed hands six times over the next three minutes and the game was tied 50-50 at the 12:53 mark after a jumper by Martha Taylor. But EOU went on an 11-0 run to begin pulling away. The Mounties would lead by as many as 15 points.

The Beacons were led by Anderson (pictured) who finished with 17 points. The senior was 7-for-16 from the field including a 3-for-6 effort from behind the perimeter. Lindsey Shearer added 15 points along with team highs of seven rebounds and five assists. Atkins finished with nine points before fouling out.

Head Coach Liz Turner-Bolton said, “We played well against Eastern on Friday night. We shot the ball well and were opportunistic on offense. We defended EOU's strength in guard play. We had a great tempo and pace but we struggled on the boards.

Eastern Oregon (13-4, 6-2 CCC) was led by an 18-point performance from senior Kyle Miller. Brooke Randall added 17 points for Eastern while Tina Miller threw in six assists and Korrie Bourn had 13 rebounds.

Northwest Christian once again took an early lead on Saturday against College of Idaho, holding a 14-8 advantage midway through the first half. Then the Yotes went on a 20-2 run, forcing ten turnovers as they established a 28-20 halftime lead. Then a 16-0 run early in the second half put the game away for CI.

“I think the intensity of last night wore on us tonight,” said Turner-Bolton. “We were out of sync offensively, shot poorly and did not get the ball out in transition. We can hold teams under their scoring averages but we need to have kids step up and hit shots.”

The Yotes (11-6, 6-2) had a balanced attack with Felicity Jones leading the way with eleven points, nine rebounds, three assists and four steals. Laura Geis and Dayna Drager scored ten points each.

The Beacons (8-11, 0-7) were led by Atkins and Anderson, scoring eight points apiece. Shearer scored seven points and led the team with six rebounds.

NCU will be back in action on Friday when they play host to Concordia University at 5:30 pm.
