EUGENE, Ore. – After dropping their first game 5-0, the Northwest Christian University softball team responded in their final home game of the season, collecting 14 hits in a 9-6 victory over CCC Champion Oregon Tech.
Jackie Imhof threw a complete-game five-hitter and registered the shutout for the Owls in game one, striking out ten batters in the shutout. OIT got a 3-for-3 performance from Brittany Cherry and Ashleigh Larson hit her 14th home run of the season.
The Beacons were led by
Brooke Davis who went 2-for-3 with a double and threw a complete game in the circle, allowing just one earned run on eight hits.
In game two, the Owls jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, two runs coming in on a triple by Cherry. The Beacons would respond in the second inning as eleven batters came to the plate. NCU would finish the inning with six runs on seven hits, chasing starting pitcher Taylor Schmidt.
Megan Mazanec opened the inning with a single and after a sacrifice bunt and a strikeout there were quickly two outs. The Beacons went on to rally with six straight hits, capped off by RBI doubles from Davis and
Cassie Bishop.
Oregon Tech added four runs of their own in the top of the third to tie the game. Only two of the runs were earned after an error, and starting pitcher
Becca Lillegard left the game after three innings, allowing four earned on six hits.
Jenna Royce (3-4) came in and shut out the Owls over the next three innings, giving up three hits. The Beacons put the game away in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Davis, an RBI double by Mazanec and an RBI single by Jazzy Villarruel.
Davis pitched the seventh inning and picked up her first save of the season.
All told, Davis finished the day batting 5-for-7 with two doubles, three RBI and two runs. Mazanec batted 3-for-7 while Royce and
Dani Gehrke added two hits each.
In their final home game as Beacons, seniors
Lissa Hatefi and Bishop each had a hit. Bishop's was a double, the 31st of her career which places her just one shy of NCU's career record.
NCU will most likely be back in action on Friday traveling to Portland to take on Concordia University. The postponed double-header from earlier in the season might be cancelled, however, if the games do not become relevant in the CCC post-season chase. If played, the first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
