ASHLAND, Ore. – The Northwest Christian University women's basketball team got into the win column on Saturday night, closing out play in the Southern Oregon University Tournament with a 78-65 victory over Holy Names University (Calif.), currently ranked 28th in the NAIA Division II Coaches Poll.
Head Coach Liz Turner-Bolton said, “This was an unbelievable win for us, against a team that was bigger, faster, and stronger than us. They probably had us beat by two to four inches at every position. It might have been the most fundamentally sound play that I've seen in fifteen years and it was the best I've seen the Beacons play in a long time. We played within ourselves and really did what we needed to do tonight to get the win.
NCU (1-1) was led by senior
Jess Anderson (pictured), scoring 17 points as she hit 4-for-8 from three-point range. She pulled off a career high for three-pointers and was just one point shy of her personal best scoring effort.
Lindsey Shearer finished off a strong opening weekend with a double-double, scoring 15 points and adding a career-high 16 rebounds, third-most ever for a Beacon. The junior added a team-high five assists.
Katie Collins came off the bench to score 14 points and three steals and starting point guard
Aly Bruns scored nine points with a game-high four steals. Senior
Martha Taylor scored ten points in the victory.
Holy Names (0-2) was led by Britni Ronolo, scoring a double-double with 20 points and ten rebounds. Clara Butler-Green added ten points off the bench. Holy Names shot just 39% in the game while the Beacons hit at a 45% clip, hitting 8-for-17 from three-point range.
Northwest Christian will have until November 9th to see official action when they travel to face Simpson University in Redding, California at 5:30 pm. Next Saturday will be the home debut of sorts for the Beacons as they host Lower Columbia Community College in a scrimmage. Tip-off is set for 2:00 pm for that one.
