EUGENE, Ore. – After losing their first five CCC games this season, the Northwest Christian University women's basketball team has now won six of their past eight games after a historic sweep this weekend over Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon University. It was the first win in school history against Southern and the first win ever on the road against Oregon Tech.
With the weekend sweep, Northwest Christian jumped from eighth place to a three-way tie for sixth in the Cascade Conference and the Beacons are now just ½ game out of fifth place. NCU boasts a 6-7 mark in conference play, equal to the records of Eastern Oregon and SOU. Warner Pacific rests just above the trio at 6-6.
The Beacons opened their weekend by flexing their offensive muscles with a season-high point total in a 90-78 win at Oregon Tech. NCU withstood a 21-0 Owl run in the second half, using every bit of a 49-28 halftime lead.
Aly Bruns led a foursome of players in double-figures with 16 points, adding five assists and five rebounds.
Sheena Alexander and
Hope Williams (pictured) scored 14 points apiece with the latter adding a team-high eight rebounds.
Lindsey Shearer scored 13 and
Martha Taylor provided a huge spark off the bench with nine points and four steals.
Oregon Tech was led by Morgan Hofman, scoring a game-high 25 points. Karissa Dixon added twelve points and five assists and Brittany Cherry chipped in eleven and a game-high nine rebounds.
On Saturday history was made as NCU knocked off Southern Oregon for the first time in nine tries, 80-58. The Beacons held the Raiders to just 32% shooting in the game and out-rebounded SOU for the first time ever, 46-32. Shearer led the charge for Northwest Christian, scoring a season-high 24 points on 7-for-12 shooting with a trio of three-pointers. Alexander added 18, also hitting three treys while picking up eight rebounds and three steals. Williams registered the second highest rebound total in school history with 16, adding 13 points for her sixth double-double of the season.
Jess Anderson added nine points off the bench.
Southern Oregon (13-12, 6-7 CCC) was led by Whitney Scott, coming off the bench to score 20 points. The Raider starting lineup accounted for just 20 total points, including twelve from Krystal Smith before fouling out.
The Beacons will look to carry their momentum back home next weekend, closing out the 2010-2011 home schedule against Warner Pacific on Friday night at 5:30 pm, and the facing Concordia on Saturday, also at 5:30 pm.
