SALEM, Ore. – The Northwest Christian University softball team remains winless in Cascade Collegiate Conference action after a sweep at the hands of Corban College on Tuesday. The Beacons were outscored 18-3 on the day and took a mercy-rule defeat in game two.
The Beacons (10-16, 0-4 CCC) dropped the opener to the Warriors, 7-1.
Brooke Davis (5-8) was tagged with the loss after allowing seven runs on nine hits. The sophomore did strikeout six batters in six innings of work, bringing her season total to 67 strikeouts.
The Beacons had seven hits including two apiece from
Brittany Robles and
Jonni Byrne. Byrne scored the Beacons only run of the game in the seventh inning on an RBI single by
Lissa Hatefi.
NCU lost game two by an 11-2 score. The Beacons were down 11-0 heading into the fifth inning, but could only manage two runs, not enough to prevent the eight-runs-after-five-innings mercy rule. Hurt by a trio of errors by the Northwest Christian University defense,
Kalyssa Koontz (4-2) took the loss, allowing seven runs, but only one earned run. She allowed nine hits over three innings of work and struck out one batter.
The Beacons had another seven hits in the game with only Hatefi recording a multi-hit game. Byrne and Hatefi scored the two runs in the fifth inning on consecutive RBI singles by Davis and
Cassie Bishop.
A silver lining to the losses came for senior Robles who became NCU's all-time leader for games played. Robles has now played in 142 games, topping the old record of 141 set by Kasey Sconce between 2004-2007.
This weekend the Beacons come back to James Park to play their Cascade Conference home opener against the Oregon Tech Owls (15-14, 3-1) on Friday at 2:00 pm, followed on Saturday with the Southern Oregon Raiders (6-12, 2-2) at 11:00 am.
