Beacons Up and Down to Finish Tourney

EUGENE, Ore. – Over the final two days of the Southern Oregon University tournament, the Northwest Christian University softball team went 1-3. After a pair of nail-biter losses, the Beacons picked up a come-from-behind win on Saturday morning, before dropping an 8-0 mercy loss to Azusa Pacific.

Hope International 2, Northwest Christian 1 (8 innings)

Brooke Davis pitched the entire way for NCU in the loss, striking out seven and allowing just one earned run in a 2-1 extra-inning loss to Hope International. The Royals got on the board first in the sixth inning. Kyla Uphold had a lead-off triple and she was brought in by Caitlin Angel's single. In the top of the seventh the Beacons tied the game. Karli Vath scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Kristen Dehaven.

The game was played under the international tie-break rule, which meant in extra innings, a runner is automatically placed at second base. For NCU, Davis took second and was sacrificed to third, but the Beacons were unable to capitalize, leaving the sophomore stranded. Hope took advantage in the bottom of the eighth. Their runner was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and a passed ball brought her home, ending the game. Brittany Robles finished the game batting 2-for-4 for Northwest Christian.

William Jessup 6, Northwest Christian 5

The Beacons staked themselves to a 4-1 lead, only to see it evaporate as William Jessup scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game and then single runs in the fifth and sixth to take control. NCU got one back in the top of the seventh inning, and had the bases loaded, but couldn't break through. Jenna Royce (1-1) got the start and took the loss, despite not allowing an earned run. Amy Stanton went 2-for-2 for the Beacons, scoring a run and picking up an RBI.

Northwest Christian 11, Holy Names 10

In a game that saw a combined 28 hits, NCU and Holy Names went into the seventh inning, tied 6-6. Holy Names put up a four-spot in the top of the seventh, but the Beacons responded with a five-run inning, capped off by a walk-off two-run game-winning single by Corrie Gustafson. Cassie Bishop and Lissa Hatefi had three hits apiece for the Beacons and four other players also had multi-hit games.

Azusa Pacific 8, Northwest Christian 0

The Beacons seemed to run out of steam at the end of the tournament, falling to Azusa Pacific in five innings. The defensive struggles continued for NCU with four errors, resulting in six unearned runs. Davis (3-5) went the distance for the Beacons, allowing two earned runs on six hits, while striking out six batters.

Northwest Christian will be back in action on Sunday, March 7th as they play host to Walla Walla University in their home opening double-header. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
