Another Comeback Falls Short

McMINNVILLE, Ore. – It wasn't the first dramatic comeback of the season, and it probably won't be the last, but Monday's 88-86 road loss to Linfield College might be the most memorable of the season. Trailing by 20 points with only 13 minutes remaining, the Northwest Christian University women's basketball stormed all the way back to within one point, before falling short.

The Beacons never held a lead in the contest, and were trailing 56-36 with 12:56 remaining on the clock. A three-pointer by Jess Anderson sparked a 7-0 run and the comeback fight was on. With only 1:19 to play, the Beacons were still trailing by seven points, 67-60. Then, playing in her first game of the season, Sheena Alexander was fouled on a three-point attempt with just 41 seconds to play. The senior hit all three foul shots to bring the Beacons within four.

On their next possession, senior Lori Renner nailed a three-pointer and with just 12 seconds remaining, the Beacons had made it a 67-66 game. NCU was forced to foul Linfield's Abby Olbrich who made 1-of-2 free throw attempts with eight ticks to go and the Beacons couldn't get off a last-second shot to complete the upset bid. Overall, it would end up as a 30-12 run to end the game for the Beacons.

The Beacons (4-6) out-shot the Wildcats 49% to 46% in the game, including a season-high 9-for-18 effort behind the three-point line. Leading the way off the bench was Anderson, scoring 13 points as she hit a trio of three-pointers. Hope Williams (pictured) matched the team-high with 13 points, adding a game-high eight rebounds. Alexander finished her first game with 12 points, adding a pair of steals while Renner and Lindsey Shearer added eight points each.

Linfield (5-4), who matched their win total from the entire 2009-2010 season with the victory, was led by an astounding 37-point, six-steal effort from Micha Pringle, who shot 14-for-25 off the bench. It was the third-highest single-game point total in school history. The junior had 25 points in the first-half alone. Gretchen Owens added 14 points.

Northwest Christian returns to action on Tuesday afternoon, playing host to Simpson University at 4:00 pm.
