Brooke Bombs Bury Bruins

EUGENE, Ore. – Another game, another statement for Northwest Christian University freshman Brooke Davis. The pitcher/outfielder had another record setting day for the Beacons, collecting 14 strikeouts in game one and three home runs in consecutive at-bats in game two as NCU swept a double header from George Fox, 3-2 in ten innings and 12-4 in six.

After the game, head coach Tim Hood said, “We knew that Brooke would be something special for us and she has turned out to be that much and more. The scary thing is that she just keeps getting better and better and with her bat unleashed, she's going to do some amazing things this year.”

Davis (2-1) was on the hill for game one and once again tied her own freshman record with 14 strikeouts as she pitched all ten innings of the extra-inning affair. The ten innings pitched also tied an NCU single-game record. Davis said, “It was a tough ten innings but everyone played really strong defense behind me and without that it wouldn't have worked out the way it did.”

The Beacons got out in front in game one, getting a run in the bottom of the first inning when Megan Mazanec scored off an RBI groundout by Brittany Robles. The Bruins tied the game in the second and then Lissa Hatefi gave NCU their second lead in the bottom of the fourth, hitting an RBI single to score Corrie Gustafson. GFU, however, tied the game once more in the top of the sixth inning and it took until the bottom of the tenth for the game to end, when Cassie Bishop hit a walk-off single to center field, scoring Hatefi for the winning run.

George Fox's Chelsea Bradely had a strong game pitching for the Bruins, matching Davis nearly pitch-for-pitch as she struck out 12 batters and allowed just one walk in 9.1 innings. Bradely was dominating at the plate as well, ending the day hitting 8-for-9 over the two games with three RBI, two runs, two doubles and a home run.

If game one was a pitching duel, game two became the exact opposite as Northwest Christian cranked out a school-record six home runs, gaining their first mercy-rule victory of the season with the 12-4 win. The Beacons got on the board with one in the first on an RBI single by Bishop, but in the second inning the floodgates opened with five runs, all coming off of a trio of homers from Jonni Byrne, Mazanec and Davis.

Davis and Bishop then hit back-to-back bombs in the bottom of the fourth to give NCU a 9-1 lead. The Bruins then mounted a minor comeback attempt over the next two innings, scoring three runs. However, with the 9-4 lead, NCU put the game away in the bottom of the sixth as Davis hit her third straight homer, a three-run shot that scored both Hatefi and Robles.

Davis' three homers and seven RBI both set single-game records for NCU. Robles, for her part, scored five runs in the game, which is the most in school history as well. She was 3-for-4 and had two doubles in the game. Hatefi was also 3-for-4 in the game, adding to a successful day that also saw her secure two stolen bases in the first game. Freshman Pitcher Jenna Royce (1-0) saw her most extensive action of the season, allowing one earned run over three innings to pick up the victory in relieve. She struck out three batters.

The Beacons improve to 4-2 on the young season with the sweep while George Fox drops to 3-8. “We will face some better competition this year,” said Hood, “and I told the girls that if we take advantage of the little things like we did tonight, and if we get ourselves into similar situations, we'll be able to take that next step and compete with anybody.”

Northwest Christian will be back in action next Thursday as they play host to Lewis & Clark College at 5:00 pm.
