Gray Out for Season, Beacon Swept on the Road

EUGENE, Ore. – With less than five minutes remaining on Saturday night, Senior Emily Gray suffered a severe knee injury, ending her 2008-2009 season. The loss of Gray came at the end of a long weekend for the women's basketball team, that saw a pair of tough losses to Eastern Oregon and the College of Idaho.

The Beacons opened the road trip on Friday night, traveling to Le Grande to face Eastern Oregon University. NCU kept things close for most of the game, trailing by one at halftime, 27-26. Despite seeing the Mounties shoot 60% in the second half, the Beacons were within six points with just over two minutes to play, but were forced into fouling on every possession and EOU stretched the win to 70-54.

“I felt good about us keeping things close tonight,” said Head Coach Liz Turner-Bolton. “Our problem continues to be our inability to sustain our efforts over 40 minutes and that is something we need to work on.”

Elise Gray led the way for Northwest Christian, scoring 14 points. McKenzie Gambee added 12 points and Jenneca Crocker came off the bench for eight points and a team-high six rebounds.

Eastern Oregon (7-3, 3-1 CCC) was led by Kyle Miller, scoring a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Three others were in double-digits for the Mountaineers, including 14 from Jenny Fiso, who added six assists and three steals.

On Saturday night The College of Idaho opened the game with a monster 34-3 run and never looked back, claiming their 13th straight victory, 77-36. The 17th-ranked Lady Yotes hit nine of their first ten shots including four three-pointers as they built a 22-1 lead. NCU converted just one of their first 12 shots, seeing the margin reach 30-points just nine minutes into the game. The College of Idaho would lead by as many as 46 points.

NCU was led for the apparent final time by Emily Gray, who scored 14 points with seven rebounds and three blocked shots in 32 minutes of action. Gambee added 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds. No other Beacon had more than three points and the NCU bench was outscored 37-4.

The College of Idaho (13-1, 4-0 CCC) was led by Christon Vander Esch with 17 points and six rebounds. Nicole Bruce added eight points, nine rebounds, four blocks and three steals for the Coyotes.

The Beacons will bounce back this weekend, playing host to Oregon Tech on Friday and Southern Oregon on Saturday in another pair of Cascade Collegiate Conference games. Both are scheduled for a 5:30 pm start time.
