Beacons Shutout in Conference Opener

SALEM, Ore. – The efforts of the Northwest Christian men's soccer teams might not translate as well onto paper, but a 5-0 loss to Corban College on Friday night in the Cascade Collegiate Conference opener, gave the team an opportunity to focus on what they will need to do to be successful in the CCC this season.

“We have a lot of talent on the field,” said head coach Chris Bolton. “Our guys just haven't been able to come together as a team yet and really work as a cohesive unit, which is just something that is going to take time to develop.”

The young Beacon squad started eight freshmen in the contest, but managed to get ten shots of, including four from first-year striker Jacob Acedo. Freshman Carlos Sandoval also took his first shot attempts of the season, forcing Corban keeper Aaron Franklin into a save on one of those shots.

The Corban offense got on the board with the eventual game winner in the 5th minute and they would score again in the 35th minute, making it 2-0 at the intermission. The Warriors added three more in the second half, with two goals coming after a defensive mix up by the Beacons. “It's just one of those things where are guys are still getting used to each other out there, and learning how to adjust when a player gets caught out of position after an offensive possession,” said Bolton.

Cuyler Ziegler recorded six saves for the Beacons (0-3-1, 0-1 CCC) who will be back in action on Monday when they return home to play host to Walla Walla University. Kick-off for that contest is scheduled for 7:00 pm
