EUGENE, Ore. – With a 2-1 victory over Northwest University on Friday night, the Beacons had put themselves in the driver's seat for the final CCC-South playoff spot. They remain in the playoff picture after a 5-1 loss to The Evergreen State on Saturday night, but will need some help getting into the post-season.
The Beacons played one of their most complete games on Friday evening against the Eagles. The Beacons were out-shot 17-10, but were able to keep the game scoreless headed into the second half. It was a physical contest with 30 combined fouls that would be a major factor in deciding the outcome of the game.
In the 68th minute, senior Forward
Greg Erickson was fouled driving in the box and made the ensuing penalty kick to give NCU a 1-0 lead. It took the Beacons less than two minutes to score the game-winner. After another Northwest foul,
Alex Crossingham placed the long free kick into the top shelf, past the keeper for the score and a 2-0 lead.
The game's final goal was also scored after a penalty in the box as Tim Starr of the Eagles scored on his own penalty kick to help Northwest avoid the shutout with under five minutes to play. Beacon keeper Cuyler Ziegler ended the night with four saves.
On Saturday the Beacons once again got on the board first, this time scoring in the 13th minute of the contest.
Jacob Acedo laced a pass to Erickson who lobbed the ball in an over the keeper from 20 yards out. The lead didn't last long, however, as the Geoducks went on to score two goals before halftime. They added another three scores in the second half for the 5-1 final.
Northwest Christian is now 2-11-1 overall and sits at 2-9 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. They are currently one game behind Corban College for the third and final playoff berth from the CCC-South division. Should Corban lose on Tuesday night when they face Cascade (6-5), then NCU will have a chance to tie the Warriors with a victory over Oregon Tech on Wednesday evening.
In the event of such a tie, the final playoff spot would first go to the team with a head-to-head advantage over the course of the season. Since the teams split a pair of meetings, the second tie-breaker would be used. The playoff berth would then come down to each team's Longo rating within the divisional games.
