Beacons Drop Pair of CCC Matches

Mercedes LeClaire
EUGENE, Ore. – The Northwest Christian University women's volleyball team took a set from Concordia, but it wasn't enough to avoid a 25-14, 18-25, 25-16, 28-26 loss and a 0-2 weekend overall after also falling to Corban College on Friday night. The pair of losses ended a season-best three-match winning streak for the Beacons.

The Beacons went into Salem looking to avenge a 3-1 loss at home earlier this season, but it wouldn't come to be. The Warriors finished off the season sweep with a 25-20, 25-12, 25-21 win. “We were hoping that our winning streak would continue,” said Head Coach Mike Gaffaney, “but we just didn't play very well tonight. We did some things that were very good and we can focus and build off of that.”

Cassie Bishop led the way for the Beacons with ten kills, hitting 269. She added a team-best four blocks, including the only solo block of the match for either team. Brooke Stribling added nine kills and a match-high 12 digs and Whitney Hoff registered 22 assists for the offense.

On Saturday the Beacons got off to a slow start and ended up dropping the first set to Concordia 25-14. Concordia hit .481 in that set with just one hitting error. But NCU quickly rebounded, winning set two. After CU took the third set, Northwest Christian had a chance to send the match to a fifth and deciding set, but the Cavaliers pulled out the 28-26 win.

Hoff had a strong 23 assist effort for the Beacons, adding nine digs and three service aces. Stribling led the offense with 15 kills and she also had nine digs, along with three blocks. Mercedes LeClaire collected a season-high 18 digs in the loss.

The Beacons (8-12, 2-10 CCC) will look to rebound on Monday with a non-conference match against Multnomah University. The first serve is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
