LACEY, Wash. - Bushnell won their season opener on Saturday, knocking off Saint Martin's University on the road, 4-2.
Omar Barajas scored a pair of goals while
Danny Rojas scored one and assisted on another as the Beacons improved their non-conference undefeated streak to 13 games.
"The team played very well today against a very physical opponent," said Head Coach
Joao Ehlers. "I am very pleased with how we were able to maintain the intensity throughout the match and control the ball for most of the game."
Barajas (pictured) wasted little time in getting the season off to a bang, scoring the opening salvo in the 14th minute off a pass from
Jorge Lopez. The Saints tied things up in the 37th minute and the teams took a 1-1 tie into the second half. The strike was a long-time coming for the junior, who missed all but five games last season with an injury.
All four second-half goals came in a seven-minute flurry, kicked off by
Jorge Lopez, scoring off a pass from
Javier Gutierrez in the 61st minute. Just two minutes later, Rojas would plant the game-winner on a penalty kick before assisting Barajas' second strike just 66 seconds later to make it 4-1.
SMU put an end to the rally in the 68th minute with their second goal.
Bushnell (1-0) out-shot Saint Martin's 14-11 and held an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal.
William Haberfield made two saves in goal on his way to the victory.
UP NEXT: Bushnell will play their home opener on Thursday, taking on Simpson University at Civic Park at 2:00 pm.
