Mathis Completes Triple Crown as Beacons Fall

EUGENE, Ore. – The Bushnell women's basketball team was upset by Evergreen on Saturday night, 64-56, on a night in which Libby Mathis completed the Beacons all-time rebounding triple crown.

Already holding the records for both offensive and total rebounds, Mathis took over the career record for defensive rebounds as well on Saturday, passing Morgan McKinney's 555. She ends the evening with 305 offensive, 556 defensive, and 861 total rebounds.

The milestone came in a tough loss for the Beacons, who trailed 52-40 after the third quarter, opened the fourth on a 13-0 run to take the lead, only to see the Geoducks power through and ice the win with seven free-throws in the final minutes.

"What a frustrating night in Beaconville," said head coach Chad Meadors. "We started the game flat and whenever you get behind these guys early, you give them a lot of confidence, and boy they knocked down shots. We talked about getting them off the three-point line, and we didn't do it. They hit catch-and-shoot buckets all night, and at the end of the day when you shoot 28% from the field you're always going to struggle to win."

The Beacons dominated many facets of the game, out-rebounding Evergreen 48-42, earning 14 offensive rebounds for an 11-0 swing in second-chance scoring, and forcing ESC into more turnovers, but the home team shot just 19-for-68 from the field and hit 22% of their three-pointers.

The Beacons were led in the loss by Mathis, who finished with 17 points and 17 rebounds. It was a season-high for rebounds and her fourth consecutive double-double. Mathis also posted two blocked shots, bringing her within one of tying another career record in that category. Ayden Krupke was the only other Bushnell player in double figures, scoring 12 points and eight boards while Nevaeh Lopez came off the bench to score seven points and a team-high four assists.

The Geoducks (3-10, 3-8) had four players in double-digits, led by Jalyn Sackrider with 19 points and 12 rebounds, along with four blocks. Sydney VanNess added 15 points and hit a pair of three-pointers as ESC shot 50% from the arch in the game.

With the loss, Bushnell closes out the first half of the Cascade Collegiate Conference slate with a 6-12 overall record and a 5-7 mark in CCC games to sit in seventh-place. The top eight teams will make the post-season tournament.

The Beacons will look to rebound on the road next weekend with a pair of important games, starting with eighth-place Warner Pacific (7-11, 4-8) on Friday at 5:30 pm.
