SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The Bushnell softball team went out on a high note this weekend, wrapping up a four-game series sweep of Warner Pacific University with 3-2 and 5-2 victories.
Â
In a day dominated by the play of Bushnell's 11 seniors, who were honored in a post-game ceremony as well, the season finale saw them collect 13 of Bushnell's 15 hits and all eight RBI.
Â
It was a junior pitcher who also made history on Saturday as
Emily Cole (10-14) picked up her ninth and tenth wins of the season, becoming the first Beacon pitcher to secure ten wins in 14 years. The last pitcher to do so was Brooke Davis, who will coincidentally be inducted into the Bushnell Athletics Hall of Fame on Sunday afternoon.
Â
GAME ONE: Bushnell 3, Warner Pacific 2
Â
Senior
Tierra Dumlao had a big game for the Beacons in the opener out of the leadoff spot, hitting 3-for-4 with two RBI, including a game-winning walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Â
The Beacons came back multiple times in the game as WPU went ahead 1-0 in the third and 2-1 in the fourth. Each time the Bushnell seniors were able to respond. In the bottom of the third, Dumlao singled up the middle to bring home
Halliday Hubbard. In the bottom of the fourth it was a sacrifice fly from
Madison Steelman, scoring
Suzi Krstic.
Â
Cole went the distance in the opener, striking out six batters and giving up six hits.
Â
GAME TWO: Bushnell 5, Warner Pacific 2
Â
The Beacons had to come from behind once again in game two, rallying from a 2-0 deficit to score all five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Â
Alyssa Ferriera kicked things off with an RBI single to score Dumlao.
Mandy Fetters followed with a single that scored Ferreira to tie the game before a Steelman double brought in Krstic for what would amount to the game-winner. The Beacons weren't done, however, as
Molly Haley roped a single down the left field line to score a pair of insurance runs.
Â
Cole got the victory once again, this time in relief, as she threw the final two innings, collecting one strikeout and giving up just one hit.
Â
Ferreira finished the game with two hits, as did junior
Breanna Hilton.
Faith Wayman capped off her career with a fifth-inning triple. The first three-bagger of her career was her 115th hit, placing her ninth on Bushnell's all-time list.
Â
Bushnell wrapped up their season at 15-31, matching their highest win total over the past eight seasons.
