VANCOUVER, B.C. – The visiting Bushnell University softball team couldn't get the bats going on Saturday as the University of British Columbia came away with a pair of shutout wins in the Cascade Collegiate Conference Opener.
Carleen Murray tossed 14 shutout innings for the Thunderbirds (7-6, 2-0 CCC), holding the Beacons (5-8, 0-2) to eight hits on the day.
GAME ONE: British Columbia 2, Bushnell 0
Murray held the Beacons to just four hits and struck out five in the opener and the Thunderbirds recorded seven hits of their own, all from different batters.
Kaitlyn Kim got the scoring started with a solo shot over the center field fence in the bottom of the first. UBC made it a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Avery Mossop scored on an obstruction call following a base-hit from Kennedy Ainge.
Emily Cole (2-5) got the start for Bushnell, allowing two runs on seven hits through six innings of work.
GAME TWO: British Columbia 3, Bushnell 0
Kim once again got the Thunderbirds on the board in game two, bringing home Kaitlyn Eng on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third. The next two runs were scored in the fifth, thanks to a Shae Sever single to left field to make it a 3-0 lead.
Violet Richardson led the Beacons at the plate in game two, hitting 2-for-3 with a double.
Liz Hillier got the start, allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits in 5.1 innings pitched.
