HELENA, Mont. – After suffering their fifth straight shutout loss, the Bushnell softball team found pay dirt in the night cap, but still fell twice to Carroll College on Friday, 2-0 and 3-2 in their penultimate double-header for the 2023 season.
Â
The Saints (16-26, 10-17) brought some extra motivation into the series as they are looking to claim the sixth-and-final spot in the Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament, and squeezed out a pair of pitching-duel victories.
Â
GAME ONE: Carroll College 2, Bushnell 0
Â
Bushnell collected just three hits and struck out 12 times against Saints starter Abby Hanley (5-12) in the game-one loss. Hanley retired 15 of the last 16 batters she faced.
Â
Carroll scored both of their runs in the bottom of the first inning, as Bushnell starter
Sam Silver (5-16) settled down to allow just three hits, all singles, the rest of the way.
Â
Ericka Allen, Silver, and
Faith Wayman collected singles for the Beacons, who dropped a scoreless decision for the fifth straight game.
Â
GAME TWO: Carroll 3, Bushnell 2
Â
The Saints took game two in walk-off fashion as the winning run came across off an error in the bottom of the seventh inning. It was another solid pitching battle that saw Bushnell starter
Liz Hillier (4-15) give up just one earned run in the complete game effort, scattering seven hits and just one that went for extra bases.
Â
The Beacons, who scored two runs on a
Hannah Tennant single in the third, struck out 11 more times and had just four hits. Allen went 2-for-2 with a run to finish a 3-for-5 day that included her team-leading 23rd walk. She now has the third-most walks in a single-season in Bushnell history.

NEXT:
Â
Beacons (11-35, 7-22 CCC) will wrap up the 2023 season on Saturday with another double-header at Carroll. The third game of the series will be the final conference contest of the year, followed by the non-conference fourth game. For the Saints, they head into the CCC contest needing a victory, or a loss for Northwest at Southern Oregon, to claim a spot in the CCC tourney.
