SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The Bushnell softball team pounded out 23 hits on Saturday as they walked away with another two-game sweep of Warner Pacific University.
Â
The Beacons (12-26, 8-14 CCC) claimed the three-game sweep of the conference series with a 7-4 win in the opener and followed that up with an 8-7 victory in the non-conference game two. Bushnell has won four straight games for the first time since 2014.
Â
Ten different batters collected hits for the Beacons, led by another incredible performance by senior
Anabel Mendez (pictured) who went 5-for-5 on the day with four runs, four RBI, two doubles and a triple. Her two doubles in game two gave her 13 on the season, tying Bushnell's single-season record of 13, set by Hall of Famer Kasey Sconce in 2004.Â
Suzi Krstic also had a big day with four hits and four runs.
Â
With the losses, Warner Pacific moved to 5-31 on the season and 3-21 in CCC action.
Â
Game One: Bushnell 7, Warner Pacific 4
Â
Starting pitcher
Sam Silver helped herself out greatly in the first inning, using a two-RBI single to give the Beacons a 4-0 lead. She finished out her second straight complete game effort, striking out a pair and giving up for runs for her team-leading sixth win of the season.
Faith Wayman made some history in the fifth inning as she capped off the scoring with a sacrifice fly to bring home Mendez. It was her fourth sac fly on the season, a new school record for the Beacons, breaking a record which was set by Brooke Davis in 2010.Â
Â
Warner Pacific was led by Peyton Willoughby who went 4-for-4 in the game and scored twice. Abby Carlson took the loss, allowing four earned runs over the first two innings.
Â
Game Two: Bushnell 8, Warner Pacific 7
Â
The Beacons collected 13 hits in the non-conference game, including six that went for extra bases. The teams traded leads three different times in the contest with Bushnell finally taking the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Â
Trailing 7-6,
Alyssa Ferreira followed a leadoff double from Mendez with a hard shot up the middle, that went off the pitcher. Mendez came around to score to ty the game. The following batter was
Jordan Kuykendall who smacked her second triple of the season to deep center field, scoring Ferreira for what would become the game-winner.
Â
Aliyah Kelly got the win for the Beacons, throwing four total innings, allowing two unearned runs on just one hit while striking out four batters. The freshman left after two innings with a 4-2 lead and was later called on in relief in the sixth inning, coming in with the bases loaded and no outs. Just one of those inherited runners scored in the sixth and she closed the game with perfect ninth for her fifth win of the season.
Â
Mendez went 3-for-3 in the game while Krstic, Ferreira, and Kuykendall each had a pair of hits, including two doubles for Krstic.
Â
The weekend sweep for the Beacons has helped Bushnell jump back into playoff contention with just two weeks remaining in the Cascade Collegiate Conference regular season. Bushnell is currently sitting in eighth place, two games back in the win column behind both Corban and Northwest.
Â
The Beacons play Corban in Salem on Wednesday for a double-header and will take on Northwest University for four games (three CCC counters) at home next weekend. Six teams qualify for the conference tournament.
