SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The Bushnell University softball team scored six runs in the second inning, boosted by a three-run homer from
Anabel Mendez, to come away with a 7-3 Cascade Collegiate Conference victory over visiting Corban University on Tuesday at Rich Schwab Field.
Bushnell (6-9, 3-4 CCC) rebounded after being shut out in back-to-back games on Saturday by getting its offense going early. Co-Head Coach
Jim Patrick said, "It's always good to beat your rival and especially coming off a tough weekend, it was good to see them have fun and pick up a good win."
The Beacons loaded the bases with a one-out single to right by
Suzi Krstic in the bottom of the second.
Alyssa Ferreira reached on a fielder's choice in the following at-bat to score the first run.
Madison Steelman followed with a two-RBI single to left field before Mendez doubled the advantage with a three-run homer to left to make it a 6-0 lead. Â
The Warriors cut the deficit to 6-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth.
Faith Wayman got one of those runs back for the Beacons with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth, scoring Krstic. Corban added a run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh following a leadoff triple but that would end the scoring as the next two batters grounded out. Â
Sam Silver (3-5) held a no-hitter until the top of the fifth. The senior pitched her third straight complete game, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with four strikeouts.
Alise Olson pitched the final four innings for Corban (8-13, 3-4 CCC), allowing just one run on two hits.
Bushnell prepares for a road trip this weekend, traveling to Lacey, Washington for a four-game non-conference series with NCAA Division II Saint Martin's University.
