Beacons Fall Twice at William Jessup

ROCKLIN, Calif. – The visiting Bushnell University softball team dropped both games at William Jessup University on Tuesday, falling 9-1 and 4-3 in the non-conference matchup.

The Beacons drop to 0-4 on the season with the loss, while William Jessup is off to a 6-0 start.

GAME ONE: William Jessup 9, Bushnell 1 (5 innings)

A six-run second inning lifted the Warriors to a win in the opener.

Sam Silver (0-2) pitched four innings and knocked in the only run for Bushnell with a fourth-inning sacrifice fly. Anabel Mendez hit a leadoff double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Jordan Kuykendall before Silver's sacrifice fly got the Beacons on the scoreboard.

The Warriors added three runs in the bottom of the fourth and held off the Beacons in the top of the fifth to end the game via run-rule.

Katie Blankenheim (3-0) allowed four hits in five innings of work with three strikeouts to earn the win in the circle for the Warriors.

GAME TWO: William Jessup 4, Bushnell 3

The Warriors secured the sweep with a victory in the second game despite being out-hit 9-3. Aliyah Kelly (0-2) allowed just one earned run on three hits through six innings pitched for the Beacons.

Trailing 2-0 with two outs in the top of the sixth, Mendez tied the game with a two-run single. The Warriors appeared to be out of the inning, but Bryana Yoshida's pop-up was dropped, allowing Mendez to score on the error and give the Beacons a 3-2 lead.

Jessup got two runs back in the bottom of the frame with both scoring via errors.

The Beacons got two runners on base in the top of the seventh before ending the game on a runner interference. Suzi Krstic and Krystal Akagi finished with two hits apiece for Bushnell.

Maikyla Nelson (3-0) pitched a complete game for the Warriors, allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits. Nelson struck out six Beacons.

Co-Head Coach Jim Patrick said, "Aliyah pitched a solid game, keeping them off balance. It's just too bad we made some running mistakes and errors at the end. We are still trying to get 1% better every time out."

Up next, Bushnell takes on Simpson University tomorrow at noon and 2 p.m.
