ROCKLIN, Calif. –
Aspen Slifka posted her 1,000
th career point and
Kalina Rojas recorded a double-double as Bushnell cruised to an 80-60 victory over William Jessup at the Bill Holtz Warrior Classic on Saturday.
Â
Head Coach
Chad Meadors said, "The Beacons played well. We have been prepping for this and they've been working their tails off. Tonight, you combined some really good half court man-to-man defense with the way we've been shooting the ball. Bella got off to a great start for us and she's been shooting the ball well and defending like crazy. Kalina was unstoppable on the posts, in the blocks, making plays. It was fun to watch that manifest itself."
Â
Rojas recorded her first double-double of the year, posting 13 points and 10 rebounds, while playing in less than half the contest.
Bella Pedrojetti led the team with 15 points on 6-for-12 shooting and added seven rebounds.
Libby Mathis tallied nine points and eight rebounds.
Â
Slifka knocked down her 1,000
th early in the contest, becoming the fifth Beacon in school history to accomplish the feat. She finished with 12 points on the day. "Congratulations to Aspen on becoming our next 1000-point scorer," said Meadors. "It just tells you about the consistency that she has been able to give to our program since the day she got here."
Â
Bushnell was dominant on both ends of the floor through the first half, shooting 45.9% from the field with a 33-14 advantage in rebounding. Five Beacons combined to shoot 41.2% from three in the half, helping them go into the break with a 20-point lead.
Â
Back-to-back threes from Pedrojetti gave Bushnell its largest lead of the day, 60-28 midway through the third quarter. The Beacons were outscored in the fourth but were not in any danger as they cruised to an 80-60 victory and a 2-0 appearance in Rocklin.
Â
Meadors said, "I have to give a lot of credit to both of our lead guards right now in Aly and Haley. I thought they ran the offense. You got to see some free flow, push the ball up the floor and a lot of playmaking tonight."
Â
Haley Hanson, who added eight points for the Beacon offense, added, "Before the game even started, we were super energized and excited to play together as a team. It transitioned into our warmups and then onto the court. That's how basketball should be played, with smiles on our faces, hyping each other up. That was the best thing."
Â
The Beacons (2-1) shot 48.4% from the floor, held the Warriors (1-3) to a 37.3% mark and posted a 51-26 margin in rebounds.
Â
William Jessup was led by Natalie Moulos, who score a game-high 18 points off the bench on 7-of-11 shooting.
Â
Up next, Bushnell hosts Montana Western on November 12 at 6 p.m. in the Morse Center.
