PORTLAND, Ore. - The Bushnell University softball team traveled north for a Saturday double-header and came away with their first win of the season, taking a 6-4 victory over Lewis & Clark College in the opener of a double-header. They would go on to split the day with an 8-0 loss in the night cap.
Senior pitcher
Miranda Jensen (1-2) went the distance for the Beacons, striking out a pair as she gave up three earned runs on nine hits. Senior
Anna Cardwell and junior
Jordan Kuykendall (pictured) led the team with two hits apiece as Cardwell added two RBI.
The Beacons jumped out to an early lead, scoring two in the top of the first. Cardwell opened the scoring as she brought home
Noel Balderston on an RBI double, and then she came home herself on an RBI ground-out by
Anabel Mendez.
Bushnell made it 4-0 in the third as Kuykendall and
Kerry Murphy posted back-to-back RBI singles.
The Pioneers made things interesting, collecting three solo home runs and had climbed within 4-3 heading into the seventh inning. The Beacons, however, added two more insurance runs in the seventh, getting RBI singles from Cardwell and
Alexa Berry.
The offensive magic that saw Bushnell post a season-high ten hits in the opener didn't follow into the second game as the Pios pulled out the five-inning run-rule win.
Bushnell turns around quickly, heading home to play their debut at Rich Schwab Field on Sunday against Willamette. Game One is scheduled for a 1:00 pm first pitch.
