Split Gives Beacons First CCC Win

SURREY, B.C. – The Northwest Christian softball team recovered from a tough Friday loss to split the final two games of the Cascade Conference series with British Columbia, falling 5-1 in the opener before winning 10-8 in the nightcap.

NCU got on the board first, scoring their lone run in the top of the second inning on a solo homer from Anabel Mendez. Mendez added a single as well.

The Thunderbirds posted four runs in the bottom of the second and added an insurance run in the fifth. Megan Hendrickson got the victory for UBC, throwing a complete game and striking out five batters while allowing just three hits.

Liberty Walker allowed four runs on five hits over the first 1.1 innings and took the loss. Shay Shropshire allowed just one run over the final 4.2 innings.

The fireworks were on display in the game two as the teams combined for 19 hits. The Beacons went up 8-0 after 3 ½ innings and posted two more in the fifth that would prove to be important as NCU allowed six runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it a two-run game.

Jordan Kuykendall provided the big bat for the Beacons, hitting 3-for-5 with a career-high five RBI. Tra Kucera was also posted three hits, adding two runs and two RBI. Mendez had just one hit for the Beacons but it was a big one, posting a two-RBI triple in the third inning.

Emma Jegtvig (2-6) got the victory for NCU, allowing five runs on six hits over 6.2 innings, striking out two.

The Beacons will be back in action on March 13 and 14, playing host to Eastern Oregon University for a four-game set.
