Beacons Pull off Upset to Close Tournament

Lake Elsinore, Calif. – For the first time, the NCU softball team was able to get in all six scheduled games at the NAIA SoCal Classic, as weather remained pleasant through the end of the final two games on Sunday, which the Beacons split.

Hosted by Triple Crown Sports, official stats for the games were not provided.

The Beacons opened up the final day with a loss to Embry-Riddle as a four-run third inning proved to be insurmountable. The Beacons scored in the third and fourth innings of RBI hits from Peyton Poler and Aliyah Stevenson, while Anabel Mendez went 3-for-4 at the dish with a double. Jordan Kuykendall got on base four times with two singles and two walks, scoring one of NCU's runs.

Emma Jegtvig took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out four. Leslie Reynaga threw the final four innings of the game, allowing just one unearned run and no hits.

Freshman Liberty Walker had a breakout game in the circle, throwing a complete-game one-hitter as the Beacons rolled to their second victory of the year and their first against an NAIA Top-25 team since April of last year when they defeated Corban.

Walker struck out two batters and survived five walks, allowing just an unearned run in the third-inning.

Four players had multiple hits for the Beacons, led by Mendez who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two doubles. Tra Kucera was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and Anna Cardwell hit 1-for-2 with two stolen bases.

NCU will return to the field on Saturday, traveling to Portland to face Lewis & Clark College at 12:00 pm.
