Pitching Propels No. 13 Owls to Sweep

EUGENE, Ore. – Ali Graham threw a no-hitter and Sarah Abramson followed with a 14-strikeout performance as Oregon Tech took the first two games of a four-game series with Northwest Christian University on Friday.

Graham (10-5) lifted OIT to a 2-0 victory in the opener, striking out five batters in the no-hitter. Three Beacons reached base on walks and another on an error.

The NCU loss wasted a strong pitching performance for Emma Jegtvig (pictured) who allowed two runs on eight hits as she threw a complete game. Tech's only runs came in the top of the fifth on a two-run triple by Andrea Sotelo.

Abramson (10-4) recorded nine strikeouts over the first three innings and finished with 14 as she rolled to the victory despite scattering seven hits.

Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh, NCU finally came up with their first scores of the day. Back-to-back doubles by Noel Balderston and Madi Jones opened the inning and Alexis Westbrook added an RBI single to bring the Beacons within two before Abramson completed the game.

Shay Shropshire (0-8) took the loss for the Beacons, allowing three runs on three hits over the first four innings. Sabrina Guerra was solid in relief, allowing just one unearned run over the final three innings while striking out three.

Oregon Tech (24-10, 11-3 CCC), one of the highest scoring teams in the NAIA, was held to just six runs over the course of the double-header, their lowest total in Cascade Conference action this season, save for a pair of double-headers against No. 3 Southern Oregon.

After going hitless in the opener, the Beacons (6-20, 3-11 CCC) out-hit the Owls in game two, getting two hits apiece from Balderston and Jess Garner. Garner's two hits move her into fourth-place on NCU's all-time hit list (142) and place her just five hits shy of setting a new NCU records.

The teams will be back in action on Saturday for another double-header, scheduled for an 11:00 am first-pitch. The morning contest will conclude the three-game CCC series and will be followed by a non-conference clash in the afternoon.
