Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Austin Banks, Graduate Assistant

Slifka Leads NCU

Salem, Ore. - The Northwest Christian University women's basketball was able to hold on late to beat Corban University 71-69 on Tuesday night in the Cascade Collegiate Conference opener for both schools.

After leading by as much as eleven points in the first half, the Beacons entered halftime with a 39-32 lead. In the second half Corban was able to narrow the deficit as they ended the third quarter tied at 54-54. NCU's Aspen Slifka opened the fourth quarter with a three pointer and the Beacons never looked back as they led for the rest of the game. Slifka and Reinecker combined to score 12 of the final 17 points for the Beacons.

Head Coach Chad Meadors stated, "It feels good to go on the road and get a win to start conference play against a ranked team. I am really fired up to see our defense cause three turnovers at the end of the game to help us pull out this win!"

Freshman Aspen Slifka started off her CCC career with a huge performance as she led Northwest Christian (3-2, 1-0 CCC) with a game-high 25 points and eight rebounds behind six made three pointers. Kaylen Kamelamela scored 12 points along with four rebounds and three assists while Sarah Reinecker added 15 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Despite shooting a lower field goal percentage than the Warriors, the Beacons were able to win on the road behind their 13 made three pointers.

When asked by his players performance, Meadors stated, "Aspen really carried us at times tonight. Her performance tonight has to be one of the best games a freshman has had as a Beacon. Sarah Reinecker is emerging as one of our go to players as just a sophomore, it's good to be a Beacon."

Jordan Woodvine led the Warriors (4-4, 0-1) with 19 points and eight rebounds while Kendra Murphy added 16 points and seven rebounds. Shaelie Burgess added 14 points on six of nine shooting along with seven rebounds. Corban shot 44% from the field in the loss.

NCU will look to continue their momentum on the road as they take on Pacific Lutheran University on Friday, December 6, at 7pm.
