EUGENE, Ore – The NCU softball team opened up the 2018 season on the road this week, traveling to face Simpson University, ranked No. 18 in the NAIA Preseason Coaches' Poll.

Alyssa Gayle hit .500 on the week and joined
Avery Daniels with three RBI apiece.
Â
GAME ONE: Simpson 12, Northwest Christian 5
Â
The offensive high-water mark for the series came in the opener as the Beacons collected five runs on six hits. Daniels went 2-for-3 in the game with a double and three RBI and the Beacons made their way around the basepaths with three stolen bases.
Â
GAME TWO: Simpson 9, Northwest Christian 1 (5 Innings)
Â
Simpson got a five-hitter from starting pitcher Hailee Nichols as they collected the run-rule victory. Senior
Madi Novelli had a double for the Beacons who held an early 1-0 lead.
Â
GAME THREE: Simpson 5, Northwest Christian 4
Â
In the closest game of the week, the Beacons rallied from an early 3-0 deficit with a four-run sixth inning. Unfortunately, the Red Hawks posted a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh including a walk-off sacrifice-fly. Gayle went 1-for-3 with a two RBI while striking out three batters in the complete game effort.
Â
GAME FOUR: Simpson 9, Northwest Christian 1 (5 Innings)
Â
Simpson once again applied the run-rule, ending the game early as they scored three in the first, one in the second and five in the third. The Beacons committed four errors in the contest as starting pitcher
Sabrina Guerra allowed just three earned runs while striking out four in a complete game.
Caitlyn Messman scored NCU's only run.
Â
Â
NCU will head further south as they prepare to participate in the NAIA SoCal Classic for the second straight year. Last season saw the Beacons get in just two games as a winter storm hit West Covina. The weather outlook appears to be much more conducive to softball and the team should play all six scheduled contests. They begin at 9:00 am on Friday, taking on Vanguard University.Â
