OLYMPIA, Wash. – With the game on the line and 0.5 seconds on the clock, sophomore
Jenna Christenson (pictured) hit a pair of free-throws, lifting the Beacons to a 50-49 road victory over the Evergreen State College on Friday night.
Â
The Beacons trailed for most of the evening and had gone down by as many as 12 points in the third quarter. After a three-pointer from Autumn Moorcroft put the Geoducks ahead 49-42, NCU was down to their final three minutes to try and make some magic happen.
Â
And magic it was.
Conner Borigo hit a layup on the next possession and after trading fruitless possessions,
Jenna Christenson collected a steal and hit a three-pointer, making it a two-point game with 1:07 to play.
Â
Evergreen ate up the clock on their next possession and with 31 seconds to play, missed a three-pointer that was picked up by
Hanna Mack. Looking for one final opportunity, Mack was fouled with nine seconds remaining and a chance to tie it. The senior made her first free-throw but missed the second, giving the ball back to Evergreen down 49-48.
Â
The Beacons immediately fouled, and after two more fouls to put the Geoducks in the bonus, Evergreen went to the line with five seconds to play. ESC's Zaria Jones, however, missed both free throws and Hanna Eddens collected the board.
Â
The ball was dished to Christenson who drove the floor for one final attempt and with under a second to play was fouled, knocking down both free throws for the win.
Â
NCU (15-7, 12-3 CCC) survived a poor shooting night that saw them hit on just 29% of their shots including a 4-for-20 effort from long range. Christenson scored a team-high 11 points, as did Borigo.
Katerina Brejchova,
Jeni Hoffert, and Mack added eight points each as Mack led the team with seven rebounds and three blocks.
Â
Evergreen (4-19, 3-13) was led by Corina Tacardon, scoring 13 points including three treys. Jones added 11 points in the loss.
Â
The Beacons will return to action on Saturday evening, traveling to Kirkland to take on Northwest at 5:30 p.m.
