EUGENE, Ore. – Eight Wins. Seven Conference Victories. Fewest goals ever allowed in a season. First-ever post season appearance. First playoff victory. It was a season for the ages for the Northwest Christian University men's soccer program. That historic campaign came to a close on Saturday night as the Beacons came up just short during their semifinal contest in the CCC tournament, falling to Southern Oregon by a final of 1-0.
Â
NCU held a 13-8 shot advantage over the Raiders, sending five on-goal compared to four from SOU. The Beacons pressured hard at the end of the first half, with
Tony Alcala sending two shots off within the final 15 seconds of play, barely missing wide on his second attempt.
Â
Southern Oregon (13-6-1) got their 12
th shut-out of the year, needing only one goal to advance to the finals for a rematch against the Corban Warriors. The game-winner came off the foot of Mitchell Pinney in the 66
th minute, a shot from 12-yards-out off a through-ball from Logan Guler.
Â
Yayo Olvera closed out his All-Conference season between the pipes with three more saves. The sophomore ends his season with new school records for shutouts (8) and Goals Against Average (0.83).
Â
The conference tournament wraps-up on Monday, November 6, as the top-seeded Raiders clash with the No. 13-ranked Warriors, the only team to defeat them in conference play on the year. The game is scheduled for a 12 p.m. kick-off at the Willamalane Sports Complex.
