Beacons Top Pioneers for Second Time

EUGENE, Ore. – The Northwest Christian University women's basketball team beat the Pioneers of Pacific Union College for the second time on the young season, winning by a final of 66-54 in the Morse Event Center on Saturday. NCU topped PUC by 30 (77-47) in their first meeting earlier this month on the Pioneers home court.

The Beacons (4-0) won the game despite their least efficient field goal percentage of the season, ending the night at 36.2% compared to 32.7% by the Pioneers. NCU out-rebounded PUC 51-36, while forcing 21 turnovers.

Northwest Christian came out strong with 24 in the first quarter, going 8-20 from the field (40%) with seven players contributing points. They cooled a bit in the second, however, with PCU closing the lead to four heading into the half.

The Pioneers got the score within one at three minutes into the third before NCU held them scoreless for the next five, building their lead back up to seven. Both teams shot the ball well in the fourth, posting their best offensive quarters of the game, but it was the home side that came out on top.

Anamaria Virjoghe had a big game for the Beacons, leading them in scoring with 15 while also grabbing seven rebounds and blocking four shots. Morgan McKinney was next in line with 13 points, shooting 50% from the field. Janae Turner and Kaylynn Bush each ended the night with nine points, with Bush also grabbing ten boards in her 24 minutes off the bench. Forward Katerina Brejchova put forth a well-rounded effort, scoring just four points but pulling down a game-high 13 rebounds while also earning five steals and dishing out five of NCU's nine assists.

Imari Clinton led the Pioneers (1-3) with a game-high 18 points and had two blocks. Kylie Beal also landed in double-digits with 12 points, including going two-of-five from long-range. Dominque Gordon had a team-high nine boards while also contributing six points.

The Beacons are back in action on Tuesday, November 21, when they head north to Salem to take on Willamette University. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. tip.
