Beacons Win Behind Historic Defense

EUGENE, Ore. – The Northwest Christian University men's soccer team beat visiting College of Idaho 2-0 in a CCC matchup on Friday night. The Beacons didn't allow a single shot on goal during the game for just the third time in the 12-year history of the program.

NCU (4-5-2, 4-2-2 CCC), was in the shot deficit 10-9, but managed to get two through the net. It was a hard-fought match, with the teams combining for 40 fouls and four cautions. A double-red occurred at the 25th minute of play, leaving the remainder of the game being played with just 20 players on the field.

NCU Head Coach Benny Flores said, "We didn't play our best game tonight but we work hard for each other and earned that victory. College of Idaho is a quality team and they made it hard on us tonight. "

The Beacons scored what ended up being the winning goal in the 38th minute when Defender Tito Gomez (pictured) scored his second goal of the season pushing a ball through traffic in the box before it slipped past the C of I keeper and into the twine.

Senior Olisameka Obianozie scored the second goal of the night, drilling a penalty kick in the 61st minute of play.

The Yotes (7-5, 4-4) were held scoreless for just the second time on the season. Guilherme Siquerira led CI with three shots on the night.

"I am really excited about the way the boys have been playing on defense," said Flores. "It starts with the guys up front and goes through the midfield and then ends with our guys in the back. Our defensive line of Tito Gomez, Kaleb Miles, Jesse Figueroa, Tyler Farmer and Yayo Olvera in goal are doing an incredible job."

Both teams are back on the pitch on Saturday taking on NAIA Top-10 opponents. NCU hosts No. 10 Rocky Mountain at 4:30 p.m., while the Yotes travel to Salem where they will face off against the No. 6 Corban Warriors, also at 4:30 p.m.
